Jr. Prom

Merrick headed out to the junior prom this weekend.  Grace was off from LaX and headed to the Mall of America with a friend.  We were able to watch the full power of Y chromosome plan for a dance event.  Merrick and his buddies were to meet a Lambeau or maybe Titletown for  group picture with the whole class...they ultimately weren't in the right place and Amy and I were able to chat with some parent friends that were also shacking their heads at the boys planning prowess.  Ultimately they missed the class picture even if we, the parents, were in the right place.  The crew hit a nice restaurant and proceeded to order mac and cheese, albeit gourmet before heading off to dance the night away at the high school gym.  There was a post prom, with a hypnotist, that went until about 3:30 am.  Merrick was back home about 1:30 saying it had been enough fun for one night.

Changing Lanes...

A milestone and a certain type of classroom came to pass last Tuesday night. I picked up Grace in the High School Parking lot after a late-night return from her lacrosse road game. Today she headed off to the DMV and easily passed her drivers test. This means that after what seems like a life time, I am done driving kids around for their activities. When all four were fully involved there were nights that I was on the road for 3 and half hours without leaving town. Monday mornings before work were often an hour of planning the logistics for the week to get everybody were they needed to be. This sometimes included working in extra stops to curry favors with a carpool or two and figuring out who I would drive and who Amy would drive; often times dropped off by one of us and picked up by the other. There was the logistics of planning meals based on who would be home and what could be cooked. It meant that some nights dinner was frozen pizza or peanut butter sandwiches in the car or maybe in a parking lot either waiting to pick somebody up or a pause after dropping somebody off. Everyone liked peanut butter sandwiches and the water bottles were always close by because honestly, I like a lot of peanut butter on my sandwich and until recently thought everyone else did too. These logistics often meant packing the vehicle the night before with sporting gear and cleanish uniforms, guitars, piano books, band uniforms, softball gloves, leotards, violins, sparing gear and the occasional overnight bag to work in a sleep over. This part of my parenting is essentially done and while the stress of it I will not miss, there are parts of it I will.

Grace and I talked about how I will miss the parenting part, the part where you get to be with your kids. I will miss the taboo stops into a bar near guitar practice to have a couple root beers, I will miss the honest and unguarded conversations that happen. The conversations that took place because the kids were willing to talk and share at a time when the had pretty much undivided attention. I will miss listening to their sibling banter that gave insight into what was going on in their lives that they wouldn’t tell me. I will miss watching all of them at practice not so much sport but socialization as they ‘bounded off’ to their activity and engaged their peers before and after practice. Agreed that these moments were likely a small percentage compared to me hollering about forgotten shin guards, water bottles, or time-management. I know the latter will be remember more by the kids than the prior sentiment, but we do what we can. These endless loops around town became a type of classroom and I had a chance to be a parent teacher. Cracking jokes at the expense of other drivers, teaching the kids about a kind of humor, sarcasm. Talking about the music we were listening to and the lyrical meanings of the art. Relationships, politics, religion, school and myriad other topics were discussed in small bite sized portions that helped me to do my job of parenting and their job as kids to learn. That car-sized classroom pretty much has closed up but I can only hope that if they remember it that they remember it fondly and that it helped to create a foundation that will continue even if the roles change.

Pretty Good weekend...

Plenty of road time for Amy this weekend, but it was worth it for an Ella appearance.  Amy picked Ella up at the half-way point on Friday night after work and then her an Grace made the over and back trip to take Ella home again on Sunday.  Grace did pick up some driving hours so that was a nice perk for her.  Merrick and I pretty much puttered around the house, I did some cleaning and yard work and he prepped out a new pizza crust recipe he wanted to try.  Some of the cleaning involved emptying the linen closet in the kids bathroom...clearly an archaeological excavation.  It was nearly filled with empty boxes, random socks, and even a pair of underwear from when somebody was maybe 6 years old.  Clearly it had been a long term hiding place and quick response to the "kids, clean your bathroom before you go" commands.  Grace had a double header on Saturday for a LaX tourney and picked up a few goals and an an MVP in some rough games. But gut at least the sun was out and the promise of summer was around...even if the cool wind allowed a winter reminder.  After the games we did chillax at Cocoon for some table games, laughs and pizzas.

Tourney Tee Time

Merrick opened the season with a tourney on his home course.  Not often that the stars align that watching him play on the team is an option, but tourney worked out.  With the tee time little later in the day I was able to get to see him tee off on six and then work his way back to finish the round.  He logged a personal best for tournament team and placed in the top 5 of the meet (#4) in the teams first win to start off the season.

Bdays for days...

It is early April so that means time for a cake marathon and almost everyone adds another year their status updates.  The kids chose meals for me to make at home this year, in theory it was going to be easier that working around golf and lacrosse schedules...but mother nature dealt us a solid and pretty much shut down the outdoor sports with high winds and and wet, heavy snows....not enough for a snow day; although we all thought that was a lock.  Grace however thought she should still practice a bit in the back yard.  Merrick wanted carnitas and Grace choose quesadillas...so a couple of days of Mexican meals is fine with me.  Grace also opted to prepone her family dinner so she could make practice and go out with her friends on her bday...Amy is 'adjusting' to this idea.  Merrick's smile is more about the box I think than what was in it.  Wrapped up some new clothes in a 'slow-cooker' box for him.  His loathing of slow cooker meals has become a bit of punch line lately.  Grace got a satchel of gift cards that she can use to run around town as a new driver in a week or so after she takes her test at the DMV.

Low and Slow

March came in like a lamb...and went our like a weakly cold little lion, but at least we still had spring break.  Ella and Sophia were back at a school and it was just the 4 of us home.  The opening weekend was pretty chill with everyone just relaxing...some much needed relaxation.  We continue to get Grace some driving time and even managed to work that into a stop at a cake decorating supply store while we were out and about.  Merrick has been enjoying his cooking course and offered to make home made pasta for us, a special and unexpected treat.  Early in the week Amy and Grace drove to Two Rivers to visit Jan at work and stop by the beach for a spring break beach vacation.  Merrick and I went to the shooting range instead and worked on our marksmanship.  Grace and I sneaked off to try a gyro, she was not impressed and I had to eat hers as well. I was able to get both Merrick and Grace to the climbing gym and although you can't climb with a phone there was some great mental images captured of them both logging some full sends on adjacent routes.  We all agreed that I was probably the third best in our group of climbers. The back half of the week found us in a clockwise circumnavigation of the state as we headed out early for Madison to tour the Campus at Merrick's request.  We logged plenty of steps before heading back to State street to grab some chicken strips and insomnia cookies and driving 'the gauntlet' up 94.  We drove to Rivercrest to pick up the Grandprize and his lady and headed to the confluence.  We had called ahead to Ella's' Work to say hello to her, eat some dinner, and give Grace the chance to make Ella wait on her...Grace enjoyed this aspect way more than Ella.  She is working a 'gastropub' with about 100 arcade games and we spent about an hour playing pinball, skee-ball, bubble hockey (although Grace claims Amy cheated), and some old school Tekken...where Merrick smoked my button-smashing strategy.  Up and at 'em for a UW-EC Campus tour and drop some stuff off for Ella at her apartment and then we headed home to prep for an Easter meal.  The whole TR clan showed up ham and bunny shaped dinner rolls that actually looked like bats.  Even though the older two weren't with us it was nice to know that they had places to celebrate the holiday too.  Ella was with her boy friends family and sent us a nice picture and Sophia had breakfast with Grandma Irene and Bob and Nancy.  Merrick, Amy, and Grace get to extend there break an additional day for the made up Easter Monday...but after a pretty good break I think they can use the down time.
