Christmas Markets..
Well we are slowly getting the house fully decorated, and of course by we I mean mostly Amy and Grace; I mostly just haul stuff upstairs and down. Grace has been crazy busy with school clubs and her new coffee shop job. So we don't see her around much but she is pretty good with giving us a daily update of her day around 9pm just before I head off to bed and Amy starts in on work. The weather finally turned to winter...Merrick was going to snowboard last Friday...but didn't like the snow conditions so him and his friends golfed on Sunday instead....it has been a warm fall. Today however is our first blast of sub zero temps. With our free time Amy and I have been hitting some outdoor Christmas markets..in the middle of the week even as we come to terms with a more emptied nest of a household.

Homecoming and Going Home
We have been busy with all the events that are life, the events that give us pause for reflection and the events the give us milestones of celebration. We headed back to EC to Celebrate the long and story-filled life of Grandpa Daryl. He would have liked nothing more than to know that even in his passing that family gathered for the event. We told some great stories and laughed as we worked through the grief in our own ways filling Grandma and Grandprize's house in the process.
It was a quick trip over and back. While Merrick chose not to go to homecoming Grace wasn't about to miss it. Her and her friends were making bouquets at the house and then all met over at Lambeau for photos. Amy and I went to capture a few shots and had to hit Hobby Lobby on the way for a wardrobe malfunction kit. Grace was completely unfazed by getting stitched up in the atrium before her gang headed off to chick a filet for a pre dance meal.
Somewhere in those events we also drove north looking for the northern lights, we did see them, albeit wispy and light rather than bold and trippy. Shelly came for a visit as well, that too was a whirlwind stopping first in EC to pick up Ella and then an over and back trip with Missy in the same day for a quick visit. Life is made up of all these little moments, the fodder of thoughts as you look toward the night sky and strain for either more boldness or find contentment in the wisps and subtle shimmers of light.

A little fall beach day!
It has been unseasonably hot and harder and harder to admit summer is over...or even that school is in session. Merrick spent Saturday morning across town trying to improve his ACT score. Friday night only Grace made it to dinner with us at GreyStone and Saturday night only Merrick made it to dinner with us as we headed downtown for some patio eating at Copper State....the prolonged summer vibe is impacting our desire to cook as well. Sunday found Amy, Grace, and Grace's friend driving north to visit Boot Lake. Merrick opted not to go, but the rest of us loaded up the kayaks, fishing gear, and inflatable beach float and made the beach before noon, stopping only at the grocery store for beach snacks, drinks, and sandwiches. Amy and I paddled around the lake. I fished and listened to the Packers game. My understanding is the girls laid on the beach or the inflated mats and just jabbered at each other all afternoon. We were back home by 4 to grill some jalapeno poppers and pizzas on the patio before Grace headed off to open turf for LaX. We all made it to school Monday morning, but that wasn't the sentiment on Sunday night.

The Summer comes to A Close
Well the Summer is essentially 'over' this week as we all head back to our respective schools. We did put a solid ending into the books to mark this finality. Merrick had his senior pictures taken as a roll through another rite of passage. Great location and we are excited to get them back. We also smiled for the camera for our Family portraits through another studio...we weren't as excited about their artistic license, but it will look good on the wall with all six of us together. Sophia mad the drive back for the photos and then we chased her back across the state the following weekend and she gave Merrick and Grace a wonderful 'student' led tour of Campus. It was fun to see how much she feels at home on campus, pulling open closed campus doors and leading us through dark lecture halls because it is her school and she can do those types of things. We got to check out her new apartments and her and Trevor joined us for a late lunch before grabbing some pizzas and heading to Becky/Brad's place for the night. We headed home the following Saturday and stopped in Oshkosh for some outlet mall shopping for school clothes...but I think I bought the most stuff. Ella headed back to Eau Claire, with our help but before she did we joined us at the winery for a little bluegrass. I suggested we go get tattoos the following day instead of packing....and Sophia joined us too. It was a unique and wonderful afternoon for the three of us at the tattoo shop that left us all with a literally mark for life. Ella's place is nice and it didn't take long to move her in before we made run for ice cream and costco to fill up the empty cabinets. Now the temps are climbing and we are heading back into the suana like rooms to start another school year.

Nothin' to beach about....
Grace was invited to play in a La Crosse Tourney against the legendary East Coast teams and we decided to add a day to each side of the play and take in some beach time as well. The Tourney was heavily recruited, 35 big name schools like Harvard, Penn, etc.. and the conversations we overheard were a notch up from what we are accustomed to, but somethings were the same...namely the rain. We missed the rain as we flew in but the fields did not, so the first practice was cancelled due to wet fields. The rest of the tourney was fine however, if not just down right hot on the turf. Standard pool play followed by a day of bracket play. They played teams from Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. Grace put two into the net in the opening game and played strong through out the weekend. They lost a tough match, due to a bad ref whistle on Saturday and ended up facing the same team for the Championship grudge match that saw an opposing player go down with heat stroke. It was a battle against the Atlanta team that went into a sudden death overtime....again a faulty ref whistle negated a self-goal fluke by the opposing goalie that essentially solidified Grace to Second place. There was zero shame and we were all amazed and proud that they placed so high and played so strong against East coast teams. Grace's first university contact came in before we boarded the plane out of town...overall just a really cool LaX experiences.

No Pic No Proof...
Odd weekend without any photos to back up any stories, but Amy and I were both on Video mode and didn't capture any stills....also it was possible that our phones overheated and deleted all the film. We were outside of Chicago for an LaX tournament at "Pipe City"...a massive 50 field complex with teams from all over the US and a few From Canada. The temperatures were scorching hot and with few subs on the team Grace's team eventually had their legs run off of them by the end of Saturday's pool play. She did notch up a goal in the penultimate game to keep them from suffering a shut out. Storms rolled in hard Saturday night drenching the fields and with a continuation of Rain on Sunday morning the bracket play was limited to turf fields only and ultimately cut in half. Grace's team didnt make the final cut so after waiting around we headed home and stopped at a Cheesecake heaven for some chicken and waffles before heading home. Traffic was light, which we found out later was likely do to random shootings on 43N...only got bogged down in a construction zone when we had to slow/swerve to avoid a couple of kayaks in the road.
Ella is off camping with her boyfriend and a group of friends, for I think their second of 3 planned camping trips. Merrick was notified he was an AP Scholar for his performance and number of tests taken for the system. Sophia is in the hunt for a new job and we are waiting to see how that turns out for her.

Wet and Wild....
We headed out for a Sconnie tourney for the weekend. It was a large weekend tournament with 20 fields, 130 teams total (10 in Grace's division) and over 300 games played. All of this done in a near constant rain. We only snuck in a single, albeit a win, on Saturday before the rest of the day was called off due to pending thunderstorms. Grace played D in that game, but had a great power D move and coast to coast run for a shot on net. She Scored once in the opening game of pool play and then picked up another 4 goals in Sunday's bracket play...one of the goals was her taking and winning the faceoff and then running the whole field for a shot and goal. The fields were slick and muddy but the girls played strong enough (1-0-2) to get into the 3rd place bracket and ultimately win a place on the podium...no there wasn't an actual podium or any hardware but we did get all have a damp ride home

Father's "week"
The game is way to fast for photography but we have been playing a bunch of pickleball. All variations of teams, Merrick & Ella, Amy and I vs. Grace....even a match were Grace was teamed up with a "rando", Steve, literally off the street...'he got an extra paddle, can I play?" It is a very social game we are finding out. And we did learn a few new rules. Merrick and I finally made it to the sporting clay course for a round of shooting....it was, as always, as humbling as it was fun and I am sure we will get out again this summer. Nice, challenging course with a lot of wildlife including deer and a scarlet tanager. Merrick, Amy and I headed to TR to see the new place and touch base with everyone on Father's day. Ella made it back from a camping trip for some Father's day burgers and the girls even set the Kubb court for a quick round (Amy and I beat the three kids) before the sunlight was gone for the day. Merrick headed in after the game and was in bed soon after in order to get to work by 6 am and the girls, both working later, hung around the campfire chatting (Grace was amped and might actually have a sore jaw from talking this morning) before I too had to wander off to bed before my work alarm went off.

Hard earned Hardware
Grace has been collecting some hardware and building a solid recruiting resume for LaCrosse. She was ranked in almost all categories in the state (top 5*) for goals, assists, ground balls, forced turn overs..... if there was stat that didn't pertain to goal keeping she was near the top. She took home the MVP for her team at the annual awards banquet and then was nominated for Player of the year by the newspaper for this quadrant of the state...Pretty cool deal for Sophomore playing in her second year of the game. She is traveling a bit now for to play with a state level tourney team this summer so that will be fun to see what level of competition comes with that 'leveling' up.

Changing Lanes...
A milestone and a certain type of classroom came to pass last Tuesday night. I picked up Grace in the High School Parking lot after a late-night return from her lacrosse road game. Today she headed off to the DMV and easily passed her drivers test. This means that after what seems like a life time, I am done driving kids around for their activities. When all four were fully involved there were nights that I was on the road for 3 and half hours without leaving town. Monday mornings before work were often an hour of planning the logistics for the week to get everybody were they needed to be. This sometimes included working in extra stops to curry favors with a carpool or two and figuring out who I would drive and who Amy would drive; often times dropped off by one of us and picked up by the other. There was the logistics of planning meals based on who would be home and what could be cooked. It meant that some nights dinner was frozen pizza or peanut butter sandwiches in the car or maybe in a parking lot either waiting to pick somebody up or a pause after dropping somebody off. Everyone liked peanut butter sandwiches and the water bottles were always close by because honestly, I like a lot of peanut butter on my sandwich and until recently thought everyone else did too. These logistics often meant packing the vehicle the night before with sporting gear and cleanish uniforms, guitars, piano books, band uniforms, softball gloves, leotards, violins, sparing gear and the occasional overnight bag to work in a sleep over. This part of my parenting is essentially done and while the stress of it I will not miss, there are parts of it I will.
Grace and I talked about how I will miss the parenting part, the part where you get to be with your kids. I will miss the taboo stops into a bar near guitar practice to have a couple root beers, I will miss the honest and unguarded conversations that happen. The conversations that took place because the kids were willing to talk and share at a time when the had pretty much undivided attention. I will miss listening to their sibling banter that gave insight into what was going on in their lives that they wouldn’t tell me. I will miss watching all of them at practice not so much sport but socialization as they ‘bounded off’ to their activity and engaged their peers before and after practice. Agreed that these moments were likely a small percentage compared to me hollering about forgotten shin guards, water bottles, or time-management. I know the latter will be remember more by the kids than the prior sentiment, but we do what we can. These endless loops around town became a type of classroom and I had a chance to be a parent teacher. Cracking jokes at the expense of other drivers, teaching the kids about a kind of humor, sarcasm. Talking about the music we were listening to and the lyrical meanings of the art. Relationships, politics, religion, school and myriad other topics were discussed in small bite sized portions that helped me to do my job of parenting and their job as kids to learn. That car-sized classroom pretty much has closed up but I can only hope that if they remember it that they remember it fondly and that it helped to create a foundation that will continue even if the roles change.
